Your hosts: Dietske and Gary (we speak English, Dutch, German, French)
Lovely; friendly; beautiful....what more can I say?
The Manse was the highlight of our visit to New Zealand, in terms of accommodation. I cannot add to the many high opinions that I have read from others about this gem, run by a wonderful couple, Dietske and Gary, who make sure one is very comfortable. Everything – decor, beds, food and drink, views, and even the pigs, sheep and guineafowl – was just lovely.
Our visit would rate as one of the best on all levels for location, ambience, hospitality, refreshments and of course the food from the many places we have visited. We were treated like long lost friends and we were looked after well at every level. All produce is sourced locally and prepared and cooked by Garry at the highest possible standards. The food was just divine as was the wine matches as well. It was so good we had a couple of extra special bottles of wine and to top it off with a wee whiskey to polish off a fabulous night. Dietske attention to detail and the fantastic furnishings and comfortable accommodation made you feel special. You both should be very proud of your lodge and what you provide. Good luck and we may see you again soon for a round of golf perhaps!
We stayed at The Manse for two nights during our honeymoon. Everything was perfect. Dietske and Gary have wonderful taste, and they created this dreamy place with beautiful garden and antique furnitures. We had a delicious dinner on the property, cooked by Gary using local ingredients. Gary also has an impressive collection of whiskey and cigar. Would definitly recommend this place!
Impeccable decoration, room was absolutely perfect , all comfortable and cosy, bathroom huge and lavish. Living room, cigar smoking room, Gym.
They have rural stunning scenery, with lazy verandas. Swimming pool.
Breakfast a hole new experience…. all organic and all made there.. own chickens and pigs! Fresh orange juice…..
Absolutely perfect and run by the owner that are very very nice.
Thanks for a perfect stay!
I had an outstanding experience when I stayed at the Manse earlier last month. I would not hesitate to recommend the Manse to everybody. The facilities were very nice and the staff very accommodating and friendly. -Thanks again, Natalia
Gorgeous lodge, stunning location, great hospitality and will miss the superb food.
We stayed five nights and will miss our nightly drinks, food and conversation with Dietske and Gary who are very gracious hosts. The majority of the food is sourced from their farm and enjoyed meeting the animals. It has been very hard to get back to “real life” and good call on visiting ‘Gods Own’.
We will long remember our lovely stay for 3 nights at the Manse. There were 2 guest rooms in this former French Legation on a farm, evening cocktails and private dinners sourced from the farm prepared and presented by our attentive and friendly host and hostess, Gary and Dietske. We enjoyed a wine tour and golf while in the area, but golf lessons by Pro Gary, clay shooting, fly fishing in the nearby river were also available. Hard to go back to real life after this luxury experience.
Superb stay and excellent locally-sourced food
We stayed two nights in the Garden Suite and enjoyed the stay quite a lot.
Hospitality – Dietske and Gary are wonderful hosts. Very friendly and helpful with recommendations and restaurants. Gary is also a superb cook – wonderful breakfasts and the dinner we had one night.
Internet – Fast
Parking – Easy
Room – The room was well appointed. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was excellent with a lovely rain shower. We quite enjoyed the room and access to the other areas of the house (the library and gym).
Food – This is the star of the show. They served lovely canapés and wine every evening before dinner. Gary is available to cook dinner with notice in the evening. We had dinner at the lodge one night and it was superb – everything was locally sourced and well prepared and paired with some very nice and hard to find wines. Breakfast was excellent – bacon from pigs their farm; eggs from their chickens, etc. All excellent.
Location – It isn’t in town but outside of it so a car is very handy. The location is excellent for wine tasting. It was a good base for our trip to the area.
Overall, a very enjoyable stay. Highly recommended.
River View Suite view is absolutely stunning!
We stayed for 3 nights in the River View Suite, a gorgeous and spacious suite with an unobstructed view of the valley, as The Manse is perched high up on a hill. The one picture of this suite on their website does not capture the view at all, so it’s important to note.
We loved the suite: it is large in size, beautifully decorated, very comfortable bed and pillows, Frette linens on the bed (impeccably pressed) and Frette towels in the bathroom, crystal-clear windows throughout highlighting the amazing views and natural breezes (i.e. 3 sets of double-hung windows in the bedroom overlooking the valley with a comfortable and huge garden/bay window with cushioned seating) and also has a spacious walk-in closet and large bathroom.
Dietske keeps the suites and interior of the house perfectly cleaned, and her attention to detail is also evident during the meals in the way in which the table and food is perfectly set (antique silver, beautiful china, table linens, crystal etc).
We enjoyed one of Gary’s 3-course dinners (see menu attached); the food was very good but it was raining during our entire stay so our dinner was served at the dining table that is basically located a step or two from the adjoining kitchen. We would have preferred if the weather cooperated so we could have dined outside in a more romantic and private setting (as other reviewers have noted). Dining inside for such a beautiful meal felt a little like having much-too-nice of a dinner at the kitchen table. Loved that dining table for our wonderful breakfasts, just not as much for dinner.
Re breakfast…one morning we asked if Gary could do eggs benedict for our cooked breakfast. He asked if we wanted to add spinach and when we said ‘yes’ he went straight out to the gardens to pick some spinach leaves and served it moments later in our breakfast entree along with his own bacon and fresh ‘eggs from the girls’. Delicious! Now that is a farm to table experience that can not be beaten!
The property and gardens are gorgeous and attention to detail throughout sets The Manse apart from other options in the area. Would highly recommend!
The food is to die for!
My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights. The Manse is definitely off the beaten path but that is what we loved about it.
Due to the remote location and the great advice from reading TripAdvisor reviews we chose to dine here. Canapés and wine was served from 6-7pm. The weather was beautiful on our first day. The canapés were served outside on the beautiful deck. The ambience was amazing. We were able to enjoy our four course dinner outside in a romantic dining nook. The attention to detail was impressive. It was like dining in one of the finest restaurants we’ve ever been to, only better!! We enjoyed swordfish and lamb. Gary is an incredible chef and he and his wife, Dietske, made our first night unbelievably magical. I had an ear to ear grin on my face from start to finish.
The next day, after eating a hearty and healthy breakfast, Gary took us for a tour of his property. That was such a treat for a couple of city folks! We then drove into Napier to check out the town. Later, we drove up to the peak of Te Mata and did one of their shorter hikes which we would highly recommend). We dined at The Manse for our second night, as well. We were not disappointed and were treated to an incredibly creative and delicious meal again. We had crayfish and steak. To finish, we enjoyed a melt in your mouth pavlova.
If you go to The Manse, we highly recommend eating there at least one night. We were hard-pressed to come up with other dining experiences we’ve had that would top this.
An exceptional place
We had an exceptional three days with Gary and Dieske. They have a small farm with cows pigs and chickens. A vegetable garden and flowers abound. We too live on a farm and like Gary, I love to cook. So it was a special treat for us to spend a few relaxed days with a couple who love New Zealand and want you to see it at its best. The House was a originally a vicar’s home and moved to its present location. Every where you look inside is a treasure obviously collected over the years. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable. Sheets and linens I would like to take home. If you are fortunate enough to stay at the Manse you truly will have a splendid time. In addition, Gary is a master cook and golf professional.
My partner Holly and I stayed for two nights and it was just wonderful. Between the beautiful views and farm life our visit was relaxing and picturesque. The food was to die for! My only regret is not staying for longer.
Unmatched Hospitality With Superb Eye For Detail
Dietske and Gary welcomed us warmly, and did that in Maori too. They showed to be excellent hosts throughout our stay. Their eye for detail was second to none, more than excellent and beyond perfection.
The accommodation is a characteristic house built by a Presbyterian pastor in 1910 overlooking green hills and woods by the river below. Our room was classic, spacious, comfortable and with a luxurious bathroom. Breakfast includes fresh fruits, home-made cereals and eggs from the “girls”. That is how Gary refers to their hens, cute. Both have a respectful and personal relationship with their hens, pigs and cows, even if they end up in the pan at some point 🙂 Gary and Dietske serve high class dinners in just the right setting and with a personal menu recognising their guests. We enjoyed the pool much, as well as the pre-dinner drinks on the terrace and the conversations about New Zealand and its peoples and cultures, the garden that surrounds the accommodation and about home.
We would recommend to consider extending your stay here, if only to relax and enjoy The Manse.
It was just an incredible and wonderful experience. Best hospitality, delicious meals, great ambiance…everything is made and done with great passion. Best of its class! Our staying was like coming home!!! Don‘t miss it!
Truly exceptional experience
The Manse is a truly exceptional all-round experience. Both Gary and Dietske are helpful, welcoming, and accommodating to your every want and need. The accommodations are beautifully decorated with a spectacular view. The quality shines with every detail. They are wonderful hosts providing a generous happy hour and wonderful gourmet meals paired with delicious wines. If you are looking to be spoiled, don’t miss staying at The Manse.
All in the details
Impossible to find better than The Manse. Gary is a great Chef, Dietske an amazing host. Food and wines simply superb, Comfort outstanding. Views on every angle of the property. It is so beautiful that we would recommend staying at least 3 nights. A true gem in Hawke’s Bay. We shall return for sure.
